Louise Glück is not only the first American woman who wins the Nobel prize in literature but also, she is one of the leading poets of contemporary times. L Glück is the 16th woman, winning the Nobel prize in Literature in 2020 for “her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.” Nobel laureate Glück was a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 1999. In 2003, she was joined as the Library of Congress’s twelfth poet laureate consultant in poetry. She was selected as a judge of the Yale Series of Younger Poets from 2003 to 2010. She has gathered of her work for five decades in her Collected Poems 1962-2012 and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. She has rewarded the Bollingen Prize for Poetry in 2001. Her 2014 collection of original verse, Faithful and Virtuous Night, won the National Book Award. She has obtained the Gold Medal for Poetry from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. President Barack Obama provided her with the National Humanities Medal in 2016. The following year, she published American Originality: Essays on Poetry. She also has won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for The Wild Iris (1992). Now, she teaches English and poetry like a professor at Yale University and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
