Abstract

This thesis examines the critical role of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in conflict resolution across Africa through United Nations (UN) missions, focusing on their contributions to regional stability and peacebuilding in volatile regions like Liberia and Sudan. As one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping, Bangladesh has consistently demonstrated professionalism, resilience, and commitment in navigating complex challenges such as political instability, resource limitations, and harsh environments. Using case studies of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), this research explores the strategic, operational, and humanitarian dimensions of Bangladeshi peacekeepers’ efforts. Beyond military interventions, they have played pivotal roles in protecting civilians, supporting disarmament, facilitating political reconciliation, and fostering long-term socio-economic development. Their integrated approach—encompassing military, police, and civilian components—aligns with the evolving multidimensional nature of modern peacekeeping missions, showcasing innovative strategies like creating secure environments for displaced populations and engaging in local peace dialogues. Furthermore, this study underscores the importance of South-South cooperation and Bangladesh’s unique contribution to global peacekeeping dynamics, highlighting lessons in resilience, international collaboration, and humanitarian values. By analyzing the successes and challenges faced by Bangladeshi peacekeepers, this thesis offers practical recommendations to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of future peacekeeping missions, with an emphasis on addressing root causes of conflict and promoting lasting peace in Africa. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on international peacebuilding and emphasize Bangladesh’s indispensable role in strengthening the global peacekeeping framework.
