Abstract

Inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services remain a significant public health issue in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), impacting millions of people daily. Many people in these countries still lack access to clean drinking water, safe toilets, and basic hygiene facilities, leading to various health problems. This systematic analysis explores how poor WASH conditions affect health in LMICs, looking closely at the different ways inadequate WASH contributes to diseases, high healthcare costs, and social challenges. Using data from global health organizations and recent studies, our findings reveal that a lack of proper WASH services is directly linked to the spread of infectious diseases like diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, and parasitic infections. Diarrheal diseases alone cause more than 500,000 child deaths each year in LMICs, which highlights the urgent need for improved water and sanitation facilities. Poor WASH conditions also worsen malnutrition, affecting children’s physical growth and mental development. This can lead to long-term effects on their education and future job opportunities. Women and girls face additional health challenges without proper WASH facilities, including urinary and reproductive infections. Limited access to safe sanitation also causes them to miss school or work, adding to gender inequality and poverty. This analysis also points out the role of poor WASH conditions in spreading antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which poses a severe threat to global health. Contaminated water sources help drug-resistant germs grow and spread within communities and healthcare settings, making treatments less effective and increasing costs. Besides physical illnesses, inadequate WASH services lead to mental health issues. Many people, especially women and vulnerable groups, experience stress, anxiety, and shame due to the lack of safe sanitation facilities. To reduce the health impacts of poor WASH, this review recommends a mix of cost-effective and sustainable solutions, such as community-based sanitation programs, clean water systems at home, and educational efforts on hygiene practices. These actions require strong policies, sufficient funding, and teamwork between governments, non-profits, and international organizations to address the widespread WASH challenges in LMICs. In summary, this analysis shows that inadequate WASH services in LMICs lead to severe health risks, which call for urgent attention. Improving WASH conditions can significantly reduce disease, improve quality of life, and support broader goals like economic development, gender equality, and global health. Addressing these WASH gaps is crucial for helping people in LMICs lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.
