Abstract

Sustainable tourism is increasingly recognized as a fundamental approach to balancing economic growth, environmental conservation, and social well-being. It aims to minimize the negative impacts of tourism while maximizing its positive contributions to local communities and ecosystems. In Bangladesh, eco-tourism has emerged as a crucial driver for sustainable development, offering opportunities to protect biodiversity, preserve cultural heritage, and promote economic stability for local communities. Despite its potential, the implementation of eco-tourism faces several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, environmental degradation, lack of awareness, and the need for effective policy frameworks. This study examines the impact of eco-tourism on local communities and environmental conservation in Bangladesh, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and future outlook. Through a comprehensive analysis of case studies, tourism models, and existing literature, the research identifies key factors contributing to the success and limitations of eco-tourism initiatives. The findings highlight that eco-tourism contributes significantly to economic growth by creating employment opportunities, supporting local businesses, and generating revenue for conservation projects. Additionally, it plays a vital role in promoting environmental sustainability by reducing carbon footprints, fostering responsible travel behavior, and encouraging the preservation of natural habitats. However, the study also reveals that without proper management, eco-tourism can lead to unintended negative consequences such as over-tourism, habitat destruction, and cultural commercialization. The paper emphasizes the need for a structured approach to eco-tourism development in Bangladesh, incorporating strong governance, community participation, and sustainable business models. Policymakers, stakeholders, and tourism professionals must collaborate to implement regulations that ensure eco-tourism remains a positive force in Bangladesh’s tourism industry. The research concludes that a well-managed eco-tourism framework can transform Bangladesh into a leading sustainable travel destination in South Asia. By integrating responsible tourism practices, environmental protection measures, and community engagement, Bangladesh can leverage eco-tourism as a tool for long-term economic resilience and cultural preservation. Future research should focus on innovative strategies to enhance eco-tourism infrastructure, technological advancements for sustainable tourism management, and policy development to address existing challenges.
