Abstract

An increasing global issue that seriously strains public health systems, especially in underdeveloped nations like Bangladesh, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) presents Microorganisms that adapt to withstand the effects of antimicrobial medications, therefore leaving them useless, are known as AMR; examples of these are bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In Bangladesh, public awareness is low, and poor healthcare rules and extensive antibiotic usage and overuse aggravate AMR. Focussing on the increased mortality rates, prolonged hospitalisations, and rising treatment costs linked with drug-resistant infections, this research investigates how AMR influences Bangladesh’s public health systems. Important causes of AMR are self-medication, uncontrolled antibiotic distribution, and regular prescription writing for viral diseases. In agriculture, the abuse of antibiotics to promote development and prevent sickness in cattle further accelerates bacterial resistance, which can be transferred to people by food consumption. Restricted access to diagnostic facilities and efficient treatments aggravates the issue; hence, managing infectious diseases becomes more challenging. Introduced to solve these issues, the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR) is still not implemented enough because of legal gaps and poor public compliance. Several mitigating techniques suggested in this paper aim to fight AMR properly. With an eye towards ensuring antibiotics are distributed only with legitimate prescriptions from registered healthcare experts, strengthening rules on their usage and distribution is vital. To control antibiotic use, hospitals, pharmacies, and medical professionals must implement strong monitoring mechanisms. Using a centralized database for real-time AMR surveillance, authorities would be able to monitor trends and create focused actions. Launched public awareness efforts to inform local populations of the dangers of AMR and the need to use the right antibiotics. Improving diagnosis infrastructure guarantees correct prescriptions and lowers pointless antibiotic consumption. Strengthening Bangladesh’s response to AMR will depend on international cooperation, including technical support and financing. The immediate requirement of a multifarious strategy combining public education, policy enforcement, healthcare advancements, and worldwide collaboration is underlined in this study. Bangladesh can only lessen the terrible consequences of AMR on its public health system, protect the efficacy of antibiotics, and raise the general quality of life for its people using these combined actions.
