There is a famous quotation from our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam- “Everything great in the world must be credited half to women and a half to men.”It means women are also capable of bringing good things to society.

Unfortunately, in return, good things are not happening to women. Every day we are getting lots of news regarding violence against women. What are the forms of violence and why women become the victim of violence at every moment? Acid attack, rape, molestation, domestic violence, murder, etc. are some of the expected violence which occurs to women frequently. There are various reasons behind these heinous acts, for instance, poverty, dowry, male-dominated society, illiteracy.  Bangladesh is an overpopulated country. About 20% of our population is living below the poverty line. However, poverty and dowry are interrelated. Because of poverty, poor families cannot afford to give education to their daughters. Most of the time, they get married off at an early age so that the girls can have a better life in her in-laws’ house. But it’s ironic that many girls are tortured physically and verbally at her husband’s place for dowry. Dowry is seemed to be the most comfortable medium for earning money for poor families in our society. As the men, especially illiterate men, cannot make much, they use dowry as a short-cut way to support their income. The demand for dowry is never going to an end. The more one gets, the more one wants. But, for poor families, it’s a huge pressure to arrange the amount of dowry. Failing to arrange dowry is the reason for various forms of tortures. Another reason for violence against women is the domination of men in our society. Since their birth, women are dependent on male members of the family. For this, men consider women the weakest being on earth.

Sometimes, women are not regarded as human beings. Men can operate them as per their wish. If women are not following their orders, they are inflicted with tortures like domestic violence, rape, acid attack, divorce, etc. Another reason for this problem is illiteracy. Due to this issue, both men and women are not aware of their rights. Consequently, most of them do not realize that they are being suppressed and oppressed. In conclusion, it can be said that all of us should be aware of the rights of women to stop violence against them.
